Words spelled with the letter o can be confusing because there are three different ways to pronounce o. Here are three tips to help you avoid pronunciation mistakes:
- Memorize the words that you use most frequently.
- Practice listening to native speakers.
- When you’re not sure, check the dictionary.

Three Different Ways to Pronounce the Letter o
Remember, the o spelling can be pronounced as either /ʌ/ as in “love,” or /ɑ/ as in “lock,” or /oʊ/ as in “post.”

Two commonly confused vowel sounds are the /æ/ and /ʌ/. Because neither one of these vowel sounds exist in most other languages, many non-native speakers wrongly pronounce both vowel sounds as /ɑ/. For example, they pronounce both “ran” and “run” as “raan.” Let’s practice fixing this common mistake.
