Vowels in Detail
This chapter will give you more detailed knowledge of the most problematic vowel sounds for non-native speakers. You will learn to clearly distinguish between certain sounds that may have seemed very similar to you in the past, and you will learn the common spelling exceptions for some vowel sounds within frequently used words. Memorizing these exceptions will significantly improve your accent.
第二章开始进入“元音的细节”。
第一章更像是把美式英语主要元音都过一遍；第二章会专门挑出非母语者最容易混淆的音，进行更细致的对比训练。
这一章的重点不是“知道每个音叫什么”，而是要能把相似音区分开。
比如 /ɪ/ 和 /i/、/ɛ/ 和 /æ/、/ʊ/ 和 /u/。
这些音如果混在一起，单词意思可能会变。
第二章的目标是：

The /ɪ/ sound is easy to identify because it is almost always spelled with the letter i as in big.
The /i/ sound is more commonly spelled with two vowels such as ee or ea, as in meet, or team. Remember to relax your tongue and lips for the /ɪ/ and to make them tense for the /i/.
这里复习的是 /ɪ/ 和 /i/。
/ɪ/ 像 big, sit, live，通常比较短、放松。
/i/ 像 meet, team, see，通常更长、更紧、更亮。
/ɪ/：舌头和嘴唇放松，声音短一些。
/i/：舌头和嘴唇更紧，嘴角有一点微笑感，声音更长、更亮。
/ɪ/ 通常由字母 i 表示，比如 big, sit, this。
/i/ 经常由 ee 或 ea 表示，比如 meet, see, team, tea。
但拼写不是绝对规律，最终还是要结合常见词记忆。

有些词只差一个元音，但意思可能完全不同，甚至会变成不合适或冒犯性的词。
sheet 要用 /i/，声音更长、更紧。
shit 是 /ɪ/，声音更短、更松。
如果把 /i/ 读短，别人可能会听成另一个词。
这一组不是为了记脏词，而是为了让你意识到：
/i/ 和 /ɪ/ 的区别会直接影响词义。
练习时一定要把 长紧的 /i/ 和 短松的 /ɪ/ 分开。
